Who doesn’t have a good memory of Achziv Beach? It begins with a visit to Eli Avivi, then continues to the shallow pools and lagoons or a jump to the stormy waves at Achziv Banana Beach … antiquities from the days of the Phoencians and remnants of the village A-Ziv which crown the quiet, closed bay ~ all unique in Israel. The entire area has been declared a national park by the government, so it appears that at least here we do not have to worry about this natural gem being ruined.
In 2012, when the long-standing contract with Club Med ended, which administered the resort for many years, the Regional Committee of the North assigned administration of the resort to the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and the Matte Asher Regional Council responsibility for preserving and running the resort as well as preparing a new master plan for the area. Residents of the area were astounded to learn that the new plan included a sizeable increase of visitors to the area, transferring a large part of the park’s area to the franchise that will be running the resort, the establishment of a commercial area as well as an area for performances, more parking lots, etc. At the very last moment, residents of the area were able to voice their doubts and demand development that does not threaten the character of Achziv. In addition, they demanded a reassessment of the entire plan for the park as part of the new master plan for the beaches of our area. Unfortunately, the new master plan for the development of the Matte Asher beaches was accepted (see the previous item) without including the clause for the Achziv National Park, which has still not been approved by the separate Steering Committee, which was established to deal with this issue.
